Title: Harlesctt Grange
Description: History of The Grange
kestrel - May 20, 2007 08:32 PM (GMT)
Hello to you all
This is my first visit to the Shrewsbury Forum.
I am looking for any information about the Grange area of Shrewsbury for a community profile I am writing for a college course I am taking this year. The sort of information I am looking for is:
. When did the settlement first come into being?
. When was The Grange Farm first built and occupied and for how long before it was knocked down?
. Why was there a moat on the Grange?
. Was there a Grange and is this where the name came from or was it from the farm?
. Any other information that any body out there can supply me with.
I would be very grateful for this information ASAP please as I am working to a deadline that is very quickly approaching.
Best wishes Kestrel xx

Welcome. There's a mention in "A Shropshire Gazetteer" (1989) by Michael Raven (ISBN 0 906114 13 6).
He reckons that the name "Harlescott" probably means "the cottage of Heorulaf".
He says that in the Middle Ages there was a substantial house with a moat known as "Harlescott Grange". All but the west side of the moat remains. It enclosed an area of 42 yards by 31 yards and was 17 yards wide and the walls were stone lined.
I know that there was a farmhouse known as Harlescott Grange (on a different site I think) which gave it's name to the area. This was demolished around 1960 and the Anchor pub which opened in 1962 was built on the site.
Hope this helps.

hello
in 1841 the township of Harlscott was partly in St Alkmunds and partly in St Mary's parishes.
there were 8 houses with 41 inhabitants in St Alkmunds and 6 houses with 28 inhabitants in St Mary's.
the land owners were Andrew William Corbet and Scarlett Lloyd Parry - a solicitor.
Harlscott was in the Albrighton division.

This is a definition of the word "grange" at www.aedficium.org
"A form of manor used by certain monastic orders to manage outlying lands. The grange substitutes a grange complex for the manor house, lay brethren for the lord or bailiff and his household, and servants for the free and unfree peasants of an ordinary manor. Since it is wholly controlled by the monastic house, with no conservative peasants to act as obstacles to change by citing tradition and precedent, it allows the land to be managed and worked more efficiently, to the benefit of the holder. The transformation of a manor into a grange is not necessarily a happy event for the manor's tenants, since they are usually evicted, sometimes being forced by circumstances to become the paid servants who work the grange, but with little or no job security."
So Harlescott Grange could have been a farm attached to one of Shrewsbury's monastic orders.

Hi Old Codger
Thank you for more information on the Grange.
Could I ask you if you have the time to check out this web site please www.neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk it should give me, (I can't make head or tails of how to get round it) information about Harlescott Grange in terms of
unemplyoment, overcrowding, tenure, crime figures and other statistics which I need for my essay but I can't get it to work for some reason. I would be very grateful for your help with this problem.

Try sticking the name 'Shrewsbury' into it, rather than Harlescott Grange. You get the figures for SABC in general, but it apparently doesn't break things down any further.

Yes, the data on there is more about Shrewsbury as a whole rather than any local areas. If you enter a postcode though and select the "Ward" box, some data is shown for Harlescott (but not just Harlescott Grange) and you can compare it with Shrewsbury's.

This may be teaching you to suck eggs, but you could always raid the
Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council website for any and all references. Some of their online services could be handy.
