Title: Traffic Getting Worse
avronb - May 13, 2007 08:08 PM (GMT)
Tne traffic around town is geting worse, queues between Heathgates island and Harlscott are now common place, and getting in and out of Meole retail park is a nightmare most days.

Haven't you heard, our MP has declared that there is no congestion in Shrewsbury, you must be imagining the queues ;)

Not sure if its congestion against bad road design really. If there were two ways out of the Meole retail park it would help, it only seems to clag at weekends. Tesco seems to be attracting a lot of vehicles and the timed lights by the sundorne retail park clearly need adjusting or a r'about replacing the lights. I think Friday seems to be the worst day of the week for congestion.

I personally think our MP is right. There may be the odd queue every now and then, places like the retail parks may get busy when it's kicking out time. Meole Brace will get more busy on match days next season. But if you get stuck behind four other cars waiting for someone coming the other way on Belle Vue Road, is that congestion? It's all relative I suppose, but to me congestion is where you'd be quicker walking or cycling. Having lived and commuted in Manchester for 30 years, trust me, Shrewsbury doesn't even know what congestion is, just in the same way that Machester probably doesn't have a clue when compared to London.
Having said that, it probably is more congested than it used to be, and I completely agree with Andy - two ways out of Meole Brace retail would be very sensible.

There is congestion on many roads in Shrewsbury and not just during the rush hour. The road between Ditherington and the town centre nearly always (during the day Mon-Sat) has one way blocked, either going into the town or out. I've seen Whitchurch Road, Heathgates Roundabout and the Mount Pleasant area clogged up on Saturdays and during evenings. Meole Brace can be a nightmare and having umpteen traffic lights there doesn't help. Frankwell, Welsh Bridge and Smithfield Road get clogged up regularly too.
Much of this would be sorted by building the North West Relief Road.

hmm, first of all I'm not convinced the relief road is the miracle cure everyone thinks it is going to be. How do you imagine it is going to aid the Meole Brace area? Or Frankwell, Welsh Bridge and Smithfield Road? Looking at a map of the town, if I'm in any of those places, I'm not there because there is no road linking Battlefield to Bicton (and anyone who is is lost!). And secondly I still don't see this congestion. I sometimes have to wait in a queue of twenty or thirty cars at the A5/A49 roundabout, but other than that, anyone who says that the roads in and around Shrewsbury are at capacity is wrong. In my humble opionion

I live in Greenfields and cars are regularly backed up to here from the station at peak hours, saturdays and bank holidays. That's got to be over half a mile and it can take 20 mins plus to travel that distance, walking IS quicker.
The NWRR wouldn't so much be for people from in town but for those who have to go through town at the moment from the west to the north or vice versa.

I think the school runs in the morning causes a lot of congestion especially with all those gas guzzling excessive carbon emitting urban 4x4's on our roads :P

I think you will find that a relief road would help .Vehicles that travel from mid wales and North wales and want to go to A49 north and A53 north & east are not prepared to follow the new A5 because of hold ups at Meole Island and infact all the islands until you get to Battlefield. So instead they travel through Frankwell etc. It is possible to be in a traffic jam from Frankwell island to heathgates island.I stay in the monkmoor area of Shrewsbury and useing my invalid scooter (top speed 6mph downhill) I can travel the 3 miles into the town quicker than the local bus!! To me that indicates congestion ............................ :D

I have to agree Andy, you see the weasly little blokes, briefcase/laptop on the seat beside them, peering out and sneering at the Mpvs packed to the roof with kids being dropped off before the tired Mum doing the run that day, shoots off to her second job!!!!! <_<

The queues do drop massively during the school holidays. Not all of that is the school run though, lots of people take holidays at Xmas, easter and August so they are not going to work either.

I've noticed the congestion on Whitchurch Road has got a lot worse since the new Tesco's has opened - probably since the only entrance is at those bottleneck traffic lights where Arlington Way joins Whitchurch Road...
I've switched to the new BP garage on the A49/A53 roundabout in Battlefield to fill up to avoid the Tesco queues...
erikab922 - July 2, 2007 05:44 PM (GMT)
Does anyone know if there is a reason why the retail parks (Meole / Tesco) only have one entrance? It seems the new Tesco would have been a perfect chance to alleviate the usual bottlenecks of traffic on entering a shop car park. Was just wondering if it was some sort of planning issue that you can't have more than one entrance or if they were just being stupid.

Do your sums folks, with a population of over 60 million and growing, and two thirds the population having at least two cars per household it stands to sense that building more roads is not the answer.
Andy Cooke - July 6, 2007 09:30 PM (GMT)
Making cars fly would be the answer
