Title: Guess The Village
Description: No. 4

Proud Salopian - April 9, 2007 09:45 PM (GMT)
Right, this one should be quite hard to do...

I am in a small village south west of Shrewsbury in typical English rolling countryside. On the horizon is Pontesford Hill and Earl's Hill. There is no pub or post office here, though a village about a mile away has both. Another nearby village has a golf course.

Where am I? :P

the old codger - April 9, 2007 09:59 PM (GMT)
Long shot.............. Annscroft?

Proud Salopian - April 9, 2007 10:01 PM (GMT)
It could quite easily be... but no. Close by though.

I don't think Earl's Hill or Pontesford Hill can be seen as clearly from Annscroft as from the village I am "in".

Plealey?

Plealey?

s.g.d.

I'd vote for Plealey as well... in the shadow of the brooding masses of Earl's Hill and Pontesford Hill, about a mile from the fleshpots of Longden and adjacent to the golf enthusiasts' paradise that is near Ascott.

But seeing as that would probably be cheating, I'll suggest Stapleton instead.

Exfords Green?

Redsquirrel - April 10, 2007 10:16 AM (GMT)
Asterley?

Chingwakabungya - April 10, 2007 01:19 PM (GMT)
Arscott?

(not that I've ever heard of it before, of course ;) )

Proud Salopian - April 10, 2007 05:17 PM (GMT)
It is Plealey.

Arscott is the village with the golf course and Longden is the village with the post office and pub.

Here goes.

This place once had a castle with a priory nearby.

There were lime quarries in the neighbourhood.

There is a mansion here which had an army camp opposite.

Someone climbed a tree near here and someone else was rather elderly.

Proud Salopian - April 11, 2007 09:33 PM (GMT)
Complete guess - Sheriffhales?

the old codger - April 11, 2007 09:38 PM (GMT)

No, but getting a little closer.

s.g.d. - April 12, 2007 07:05 PM (GMT)
is it Alberbury?

s.g.d.

the old codger - April 12, 2007 08:02 PM (GMT)
10/10!

Yes it is Alberbury. The mansion is Loton Park and the site of the army camp became the venue for the hill climb event. The future George IV plucked a sprig of foliage from a tree just across the border to prove he had visited Wales (Prince's Oak). The elderly person was Thomas Parr who legend has it did penance in Alberbury churchyard tied to a sundial in his nightshirt after fathering an illegitimate child at the age of well over 100.

Your turn!

this village is mentioned in the domesday book.

there is an Elephant and Castle but no pub.

there once was a mermaid.

there is a primary school but the elder children have to go to Market Drayton.

the old codger - April 14, 2007 09:22 AM (GMT)
Or Child's Ercall. Got a feeling there's a RAF connection in the clue. Last go.

s.g.d. - April 14, 2007 12:32 PM (GMT)
it is Childs Ercall

http://www.homepagez.com/childsercall/

The Elephant & Castle is on the church's weather vane- possibly something to do with the Corbet family who used to own most of the parish.

Why are we still on the same thread for Guess the Village 4? There have been more than 4 now...

Proud Salopian - April 17, 2007 04:26 PM (GMT)
